Dr Dave Brealey
I have been a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at University College London Hospitals since 2010. As part of my role, I am the lead for Critical Care Clinical Research. We believe strongly that our research is heavily focussed on the patient in front of us and we work hard to translate our findings into improved care.
There are two areas that I particularly enjoy working in:
-
Infection detection. Currently we rely on technology developed in the 1880s to grow and identify potential pathogens. This method is extremely slow and highly unreliable which means we overprescribe broad spectrum antibiotics, harming our patients and harming the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Newer molecular technologies offer far greater speed and reliability with the potential to revolutionise the way we manage infection.
-
Wireless wearables. Over the years there has been little change to the way we monitor our patients, however the way we deliver health care has changed immeasurably. The development of small wireless wearable monitors offers the potential for more intensive but less intrusive monitoring, with the opportunity to pick up deterioration earlier and more reliably.
Being part of the PSRC gives us a huge opportunity to see whether these ideas can now be integrated into a complex healthcare system and look at the benefits they bring.
