Frailty and postoperative outcome: analysis of the UK's Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme
Frailty - a condition where people become weaker and less able to recover from illness or surgery - is becoming more common, both in society and among patients needing surgery. This study is looking at data from hospitals across the UK to understand how frailty affects recovery after major surgery.
Our findings indicarte that frailty increases the risk of complications after surgery, even more than age or existing long-term health conditions. Importantly, this study is the first to show, using data from multiple hospitals, that frailty can significantly impact outcomes even in people under the age of 65.
