Safer Evidence

Safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is widely used for removing the gallbladder (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and other procedures. While generally safe, these operations can be complex, and surgeons—especially those in training—face challenges in decision-making during surgery.

This project is developing a digital support system powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to help improve safety and efficiency in laparoscopic surgery. The system will:

  1. Support decision-making during surgery, giving real-time guidance to help surgeons avoid complications and improve patient safety.

  2. Enhance surgical training by providing live feedback to trainees as they operate.

  3. Predict case complexity before surgery, helping hospitals plan operating room schedules more effectively.

The work involves reviewing current clinical needs, developing advanced machine learning tools, and building a large dataset that combines surgical video recordings with patient information.
